Why Running a 317 is Easier than a 718

Sometimes you start playing a Runescape Private Server (RSPS) and think to yourself "I wish I had one of these.. but I don't know how." I am here today to help you start a server. This article in particular is about choosing the part of Runescape you want to have. 317 is the 2007 to 2011 part of Runescape. Usually the servers you download are in the style of the later versions, but have the gameplay and mechanics of an earlier version, which is the reason that most people play on RSPSs. I personally like the mechanics of the 317 and like the graphics of the 718.

When creating an RSPS you need two things; a server, usually called a source and a client, which is the thing you create a .jar file with and distribute with other people. When looking for a RSPS to download, and make your own, you're usually just looking for the server, or source, part. You need the client, but what it looks like or does really doesn't matter, unless you're all about the looks of it.

One of the best places is MoparScape. You can download the client and source, and sometimes cache, all from a few links, which have usually been placed on things like DropBox or other up/down sites. To be quite honest, half of the links don't work, and the half of the half that do, suck. So really you're quite limited on the ability to find a server. It will take quite a while.

NOTE: We have a forum here, where you can post your own servers, and find others.

The last thing that I have to talk about is editing the servers, which the major reason that I think that the 317 is better than the 718. The earlier versions were much simpler therefore they were much easier to edit. Now, Runescape is so complicated, even people with experience in Javascript have trouble getting things to work. The major problem is the fact that 718 uses these files called .p files. There aren't many things that open them, and the ones that do, are old or hard to use. It surely takes some dedication to get a 718 going. Just to add, there are also way more tutorials on the internet all about the 317. 718 and the following really died down due to it being super annoying to use.

To conclude, I wish you a good time, and good luck on starting your new, hopefully 317, server.
